Although the number of coronavirus patients in Mumbai-Thane district has been steadily gone down, the general public has not yet been given the go-ahead to travel via local trains.

At present, only people working in essential services and women are allowed to travel by train. The authorities are currently working on the proposal to allow general public to travel by local train in phases after vaccination drive starts.

Earlier, the passengers’ association had warned to start agitation if the local trains are not started soon. As the services for the non-essential workers and common public is yet to get a green signal, the association will take a digital route to protest and begin a movement on WhatsApp urging the railways and government to start local.

Thousands of commuters will protest against the government by posting a photo on their WhatsApp DP with the text 'Start Mumbai local train for ordinary citizens'.

The farmers and milk sellers in MMR are facing many difficulties due to less frequency of local trains, while those from Kasara-Asangaon-Titwala as well as Karjat-Badlapur-Ambernath have to travel by road to deliver milk from stables to urban areas early in the morning with 5-6 cans of 40 liters.

Meanwhile, the question raised by the travellers association is will the government allow general public to commute only after the agitation or rail blockade? Passengers’ association have also warned that if the local train is not started for all categories in the next eight days, then the state government will be responsible for the agitation by the passengers.
