The population of the Mumbai metropolis is increasing day by day, and the burden of congestion is falling on the railway transport. Passengers have to travel through the suffocating crowd in the morning and evening hours. Therefore, to divide the crowd of passengers in the local on the Western Railway, now there is a plan to start a slow local of 15 coaches between Churchgate - Virar. There are plans to increase the length of platforms between Churchgate – Andheri. Soon a slow local of 15 coaches will be ready to run directly from Churchgate to Virar.
The number of passengers on the Western Railway is increasing and there is a demand from the passengers to start more 15 coach local trips. At present 199 local trains of 15 coaches run on Western Railway from Andheri – Virar Slow and Churchgate – Virar Fast. There is no local ferry of 15 coaches on the slow route between Churchgate – Andheri due to short length of platforms. Therefore, the 12-coach local trains on the slow route continue to be overcrowded. 15 local coaches are required to be extended to accommodate the increasing number of passengers. For this, it is planned to extend the length of all platforms up to Churchgate. A senior official of Western Railway said that the necessary infrastructure for 15 coach local trains will be increased.
Consideration is being given to running a local of 15 coaches on the slow route between Churchgate – Andheri. Whether it is possible to widen the platforms between Churchgate – Andheri will be studied. After that further action will be taken, said Neeraj Verma, Divisional Railway Manager, Mumbai Central, Western Railway.
