Preparing for a revolutionary expansion project, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) wants to improve connections and reduce traffic on the busy Kalyan-Badlapur rail track. With the scheduled construction of the much anticipated third and fourth lines, a major step towards a more effective and commuter-friendly rail network will soon be taken.

On February 14, the rail corporation officially invited tenders for crucial components, including service buildings, platforms, cover-over sheds, and circulating areas.

As per the invitation, March 20, 2024, is the deadline to submit documents. When the project is ready, the dedicated suburban train track will improve efficiency and offer a smoother travel experience.

Presently, there are only two tracks on the Kalyan-Badlapur segment, used by suburban and long-distance trains. In addition to satisfying the strong demand for local trains, the two new lines are expected to improve the region's whole rail system. The expansion project is sanctioned at INR 1509.87 crore. It has already completed 21% of the work, and the corporation is expecting that the work will be completed by December 2026.

The Kalyan-Badlapur line is considered to be one of the busiest suburban sections in the Mumbai Division of Central Railway. It is particularly used by commuters from the Vithalwadi, Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, and Badlapur regions.

An official said challenges such as securing seats in heavily utilised local trains on the Badlapur route are common. It is expected that the expansion project will significantly improve commuter experiences and alleviate strain on this vital rail corridor. He also mentioned that after the project is completed, a path for the introduction of additional services will be generated.

In an update on the current status of the project, the official stated that MRVC has made significant progress. It has completed a drone survey and has finalised the alignment. Approved general designs for railway yards, stations, and bridges demonstrate careful planning. The project is moving forward step by step, with the acquisition of 8.45 hectares of private land and the completion of government land acquisition.

Working authorization has been acquired, and stage one clearance has been granted for the acquisition of forest land. The MRVC has demonstrated a commitment to responsible and sustainable development by submitting an application for stage two clearance, stated Sunil Udasi, the organisation's chief public relations officer. He also mentioned that contracts for a number of components, such as the building of new stations and road overbridges (ROBs), have been completed. Sunil Udasi showcased the application of cutting-edge building methods for reliable and effective infrastructure by emphasising the use of contemporary formwork in the casting of piers.

On the other hand, the Panvel-Karjat suburban corridor project is a part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project III (MUTP-III), and it is rapidly growing.

MRVC has achieved a significant milestone by completing 46% of the work on the Panvel-Karjat suburban corridor project.

This further demonstrates MRVC's dedication to improving Mumbai's rail system. The magnificent Wavrely Tunnel, spanning around 2,625 metres, has undergone 2,038 metres of underground excavation.

While this is going on, Tunnel-3 (Kirawali) is also progressing gently; 224 of the 300 metres of excavation have already been completed.
