The contract workers of the BEST initiative are on strike for two consecutive days for various demands including salary hike. On Thursday, the workers of six warehouses participated in the protest started by the contract employees of two warehouses on Wednesday. This movement is getting widespread and the agitators are firm on their demands. But due to this, 921 buses remained standing in the depot. As a result, Mumbaikars have been suffering for two consecutive days.
The employees have staged a protest to meet various demands such as merge the budget of BEST with the budget of the municipal corporation, restore all the closed bus routes of BEST to increase the number of passengers, run the buses only after maintenance and repair, and increase the salary of the employees.
BEST has a total of 3,082 buses in its fleet. Out of which 1,642 buses are on lease through five contractors. Buses on lease run from BEST's 27 depots. Around 31 lakh passengers travel by BEST every day. The number of buses is less compared to the number of passengers. In addition, due to the agitation of the contractual employees of six depots, passengers are being inconvenienced.

Due to the work stoppage, bus services in Worli, Pratikshanagar, Anik, Dharavi, Deonar, Shivajinagar, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Majas, Santacruz, Gorai, Magathane have been affected.
A total of 1009 buses were not released from the depot from early morning to 11:30 am on Thursday due to the strike called by the workers of SMT, Mateshwari and Tata bus suppliers. In order not to inconvenience the passengers, the BEST initiative is releasing a maximum number of self-owned buses from the depot.
The BEST initiative has ordered these business organisations to come up with an immediate solution.
