On Friday morning, October 8, Mumbai International Airport witnessed a heavy rush as people of Mumbai left for their hometowns for the 9-day Navratri festival.

While addressing the situation, a spokesperson from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport said that it is due to the festive season there is a surge in passengers. There is a similar situation in other city airports. 

They have deployed other additional staff to the airport to make sure people follow all the COVID-19 protocols and there is a smooth passenger experience. After anticipating the rush, they have shifted few airlines to Santacruz, said an official of Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL).

Suresh Kakani, the additional municipal commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), said that he has the airport authorities to ensure that there is COVID-19 appropriate behaviour and social distancing is maintained. He further stated that he would ask the health department staff to intervene and tell the airport staff about the same. While expressing fear, he said that these travellers might return with COVID-19. 

Stating that the situation was horrible, a first officer of an airline commented that they take utmost care in flights, but the crowd here did not follow social distancing, and some of them did not even cover their faces properly. A few of them, like Prakash Gagdani, CEO of 5paisa Capital Ltd, singer Vishal Dadlani, took on Twitter and expressed discontent about the situation.
