Passengers will have to pay a service charge for the facilities that are to be created at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) after the remodelling and is going to be included in the suburban rail fare.

The CSMT station is to be redeveloped on the lines of the airport. Various facilities will be provided in the area. In particular, the Indian Railway Station Redevelopment Corporation (IRSDC) has signalled an increase in Mumbai Suburban Railway (Local) fares for the use of these services.

The decision to redevelop the World Heritage Site was taken back in 2008. The process is now being expedited and a redevelopment project will soon be implemented on a public-private partnership basis. For the redevelopment, the land within the station and railway boundary will be leased to a private developer for 60 years.

According to sources, the redevelopment cost of the CSMT station is going to be about ₹1,642 crores. The pre-tender process is touted to start in September and service charges will be levied after completion of the work in 3 years after the approval of the Railway Board.

Several facilities like galleries, cafeteria, car parks will be provided for travellers and tourists. The service charge for the cost of these facilities will go to the private developer.

The CSMT has been a UNESCO recognized world heritage site and the biggest railway terminal in Mumbai. The 130-year-old grand building has been constructed in the Victorian Gothic style and houses the Central Railways headquarters, platforming the suburban and the long-distance trains.

Meanwhile, as per reports, the government may allow the resumption of the local trains from September for regular people. Even though the state government has not announced anything as of now, the Union Home Ministry had earlier directed all the states to lift restrictions on district and inter-state transport.
