Mumbai’s underground metro Aqua line 3, also known as Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Line, will have a front evacuation system that will facilitate the safe exit of passenger from the train in case of emergency.

Explaining further the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) said that the front evacuation systems are deemed to be more suitable for underground metros as they reduce the need for an extra walkway for evacuation of passengers.

Metros worldwide follow two types of evacuation systems. One is the side-evacuation system, in which during an emergency, passengers get onto a walkway provided along the track. People get out through normal doors and move on the walkway, which takes them to the platform of the nearest metro station.

The other system is the front-evacuation system. In this, the doors for evacuation are located in the front and the back of the Metro train. These emergency doors open upwards on hinges and a ramp is deployed that gets connected with the railway tracks for passengers to alight during an emergency. Passengers can walk through the entire length of the train to exit from the front end of the Metro.

These doors are regulated by motormen and also helps prevent stampedes. Walking is easier for passengers in this system as either they have to walk through the coaches or on the track.

This system is already in use in metros in London, Paris, Berlin, Washington, Singapore, Dubai, China, and Bangkok, as well as the Delhi Metro, the Kolkata Metro (north-south), and Hyderabad Metro.
