The total number of passengers who travelled on Mumbai Metro Line 2A (Anand Nagar - Andheri West) and Metro Line 7 (Gundavali – Ovaripada) have surpassed the 3 crore mark, revealed a latest data provided by the MMMOCL recently.

In addition, the daily average passenger count on both the metro lines is nearing the 2 lakh mark, which officials say will be attained by end of June once rains begin.

Moreover, the passenger count on line 2A is much higher than on line 7.

According to data provided by MMMOCL for June 1-8, all the 30 stations put together there were over 1.69 lakh using both the Metro lines on a daily average. Of these the stations of Andheri (W) on line 2A and Gundavali on line 7 are the most popular ones where the daily average was almost 18,500 passengers.

Officials stated that Gundavali and Andheri (W) that connect the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro line and so it is all the more popular.

Meanwhile, the least two used stations on Metro line 2A and 7 are Goregaon (W) and Devipada with 2430 and 1887 passengers every day respectively.

Many commuters have started opting for the metro ride instead of Mumbai local trains owing to various reasons.

Karishma Lama, who commutes to Andheri daily for work and is a resident of Mira Road, said that traffic woes and then heavy crowding in local trains have made her chose metro as the preferred ride while travelling back home from office. “Ever since I started taking Metro, it has proved to be a huge relief from the extreme heat and humidity during summers. Moreover, the trains are getting overcrowded and delayed day by day especially during peak hours. I also wish that the extended stretch up to Mira-Bhayandar resumes soon as it will be beneficial for many commuters like me.”

It is pertinent to note that this comes at a time when the Indian Railways are looking at calling tenders in June for upgrading the suburban rail system with Vande Metro or a new batch of AC locals under the MUTP-3A.

Over the months, the growth of the daily passenger count has been rising slowly, yet steadily, since phase 1 first began in April 2022. The daily average has been hovering around 1.60-1.70 lakh.

Metro Line 2A and 7 experience high travel volume during the morning peak hours from 8:30 am to 11 am, and during the evening peak hours from 5 pm to 8:30 pm.

To promote the use of metro transport, the MMRDA has set up parking facilities beneath metro stations for commuters, building 8 foot over bridges connecting east and west sides of the metro stations and offering last-mile connectivity via BEST bus services.
