Mumbai Metro Lines 2A, 7, 9 and 2B recorded their highest-ever single-day ridership on July 8, with 3.01 lakh passengers travelling on the network, marking a new milestone for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)-operated metro services. The record reflects a steady rise in commuter preference for the expanding metro network.
According to the MMRDA, the metro network has been witnessing an average monthly ridership growth of around 5 per cent. Officials attributed the increase to improved connectivity, reliable services and the gradual expansion of the metro system across Mumbai's western suburbs.
The authority also recorded its highest-ever use of WhatsApp-based paperless ticketing on the same day, with more than 62,000 commuters booking QR-code tickets through the platform. Nearly one in every five metro tickets is now being purchased via WhatsApp, making it one of the most widely used digital ticketing systems among metro networks in the country.
Metro Lines 2A and 7 connect Dahisar with DN Nagar and Gundavali respectively, while the recently opened sections of Metro Lines 9 and 2B have further strengthened connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. MMRDA officials said they expect ridership to continue growing as additional metro corridors become operational and last-mile connectivity improves.
