As the city came to a standstill due to the power outage on Monday morning, gradually, almost after two hours, the supply is being restored along with the suburban railways resuming operations.

At first, the local trains resumed operations on the harbour route from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Panvel. Shortly after that, the services of Central Railways resumed as well. As the power supply was cut off, the commuters had to get off the train and reach the nearest railway station.

However, as per reports, the traffic is still congested and efforts are underway to start services from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Kalyan and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Karjat/Kasara soon. According to sources, Central Railway's mainline service has been restored and long-haul trains departing from Mumbai will be released as per the new schedule, informed Shivaji Sutar, Public Relations Officer, Central Railway. Moreover, the Western Railway service has also resumed as informed by the Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, Sumit Thakur.

Earlier, in an unprecedented situation, due to grid failure, there was a power outage in the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) on Monday. Power supply to Thane, Kalyan, Palghar and Navi Mumbai was disrupted due to sudden technical failure at Mahatrans' Kalwa-Padgha GIS centre. The power outage also hit Mumbai's suburban railway system. Moreover, all UG and PG examinations were rescheduled to Sunday, 18th October 2020, as a consequence.
