With the Railway Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala sending eight newly designed AC 3-tier economy class coaches to Western Railway, people will be able to travel on what is considered one of the most affordable AC trains by July.

The spokesperson for RCF, Jitesh Kumar said that 46 of these coaches will be produced in the first batch, with 15 of them already being dispatched (seven for North Central Railway and eight for Mumbai).

“Production of the remaining 31 coaches of this lot will be completed in the next two months. Of these, two more will be given to WR and seven to the Central Railway,” Kumar added.

Chief Public Relations Officer at Western Railway, Sumit Thakur said that these coaches will be included with Duronto trains after concluding routine trials.

Speaking on the quality of the new coaches, General Manager of the RCF Ravinder Gupta said, “In these coaches, the modern passenger amenities are of a very high standard. The passenger capacity has been increased to 83 berths as compared to the existing 3-tier coach’s capacity of 72 berths.”

Officials went on to add that apart from being the most economical form of air-conditioned travel in the world, these economy class coaches also come with the newest fire protection standards in line with international standards.

“High voltage electric switchgear presently installed onboard has been shifted below the underframe. This change has been made for the first time in the Indian Railways system, leaving room for 11 additional berths in each coach,” an unnamed senior officer of RCF said about some of the features of the new coaches.

The coaches will also include wider main entry and toilet doors so as to make it accessible to differently-abled travellers. Moreover, officials said that the AC ducts have been redesigned to offer a dedicated vent for each berth.

Travellers will also find the inclusion of individual mobile charging points in each berth along with reading lights. Officials said that the ladder that allows passengers to climb up to the middle and upper berths has also been improved in addition to the foldable snack tables.
