The Western Railways (WR), on an experimental basis, is planning to permit passengers with non-AC first-or second-class tickets or seasonal passes to travel in the AC trains and pay the difference in fare during the journey.

They are planning to do so in order to attract more commuters to travel by  AC trains. AC trains were launched in 2017, but they failed to attract as many passengers as was expected.

Alok Kansal, General Manager of WR, stated that decision was taken to make sure that more people can enjoy the experience of travelling in AC trains. They will start implementing this experiment in about a month. The commuters will be given detailed information on it, soon.

The Railway Ministry is also thinking to reduce the fare prices of AC trains and also introduce more amenities. The current fare of an AC train ticket that runs between Churchgate and Virar is between INR 65 and INR 220. Not only this, but the department is also planning to increase the number of AC trains services

Officials have said that in future, all new local trains in Mumbai suburbs will be air-conditioned. They are also in the process to begin long-distance train services from Jogeshwari station. For this, WR is planning to convert the station into a terminus.

Recently, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Railway Minister, gave a nod to plans for further enhancing the city's suburban system. CR and WR will be installing more escalators, lifts and logistic parks.
