Despite many promises made to start the train services in 2021, the state government and railways are yet to give a definitive date on when the local services on the network of Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) - the city's lifeline – would open its doors for the general public.

Due to this, Mumbaikars are facing difficulties while commuting to work every day. With the fuel prices increasing rapidly, commuters are requesting to resume the local train services for everyone at the earliest.

Many low wage workers are spending hours on a bus travelling from work to home. However, they don't come under essential services, hence they are struggling, just to earn to their daily income and keep themselves afloat.

A local resident from Mumbai, said “I urge the railway authorities to open local train for the general public. The government should come out with a proper plan on how they can resume the service and adhere to COVID-19 norms.”

After the coronavirus outbreak, the local trains had to be shut in March 2020 to control the spread. The services were started in a staggered manner since June 2020.

At present, differently-abled, cancer patients, women, and lawyers are allowed to travel in the trains along with essential workers. However, it is for the first time that Mumbai’s local train services have remained shut for such a long period of time for a majority lot in the city.
