Mumbai-Pune Expressway is an interconnection between two cities and thousands of passengers use the route to commute. In order to curb down the number of deaths by accidents on the expressway, the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP) has made it mandatory for everyone in a vehicle  – including the people in the backseat – to fasten their seat belts.

The initiative to control deaths by accidents was started by Rashmi Shukla, Deputy Inspector General of Police. Last month, the police were seen informing the drivers about the same on the expressway. After that, within two weeks, they started pulling vehicles over.

As per the rules, the lawbreaker will have to pay a fine of ₹200 per offender. So, if a group of four is travelling with two people on the backseat without a seat belt on, then they might have to cough up a ₹400 fine.

According to a report based on data collected by NGO SaveLIFE Foundation, around 23 people died on the expressway during accidents without seat belts between January and July. Out of which, 16 passengers were seated at the back.
