The Navi Mumbai Regional Transport Department has issued notices to various educational institutions, corporate offices and government and private offices to take strict measures to deal with the increasing number of accidents involving two-wheelers. The notice has been issued as per the Motor Vehicles Act 194 (c). The notice emphasises the importance of wearing a helmet. A warning of punitive action has also been given for non-compliance.
Statistics show that a major chunk of vehicular accidents in the state are related to two-wheelers and the number of deaths due to non-wearing of helmets is alarmingly high. In response, the Transport Department has made the use of helmets mandatory under Section 128 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and related provisions.
Navi Mumbai Deputy Regional Transport Officer Hemangini Patil said notices have been issued to various establishments, including government and private offices, companies, educational institutions and colleges. The notices advise institutions to prohibit entry of motorcyclists, both riders and pillion passengers, without helmets inside their premises. Failure to comply may result in penal action under Section 194(c) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 holding the organisation liable.
Patil further emphasised that public awareness campaigns are being conducted in Navi Mumbai about the mandatory helmet rule in private companies, government offices, corporate offices, educational institutions and colleges. Along with this, notices have been issued to many educational institutions and offices, urging bike riders without helmets not to enter their premises.
