The much-awaited waterway between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai is expected to start functioning from March next year.

With the outbreak of the coronavirus, work on the water project had been halted. However, the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra has informed that the ₹111-crore project to construct Nerul jetty is in the final stages of completion. The jetty was recently inspected by MP Rajan Vichare and CIDCO Managing Director Sanjay Mukherjee. During the inspection, CIDCO’s Chief Engineer M.K Godbole informed that the work of the jetty will be completed by March 31.

With the help of this water transport, the citizens of Navi Mumbai will be able to reach Mumbai faster and more efficiently. It will also ease traffic congestion on the roads.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), the Bombay Port Trust (BPT) and CIDCO are jointly developing the waterway along the east coast of Mumbai. Along with the jetty, CIDCO is also arranging parking for 10 buses and 20 cars. There will also be a ticket reservation facility. Moreover, the work on the jetty at Mandwa is also in the final stages.

The 'Ro-Ro' boat service on the Mandwa to Bhaucha Dhakka route will start by February. Transport services will first begin on the Nerul-Bhaucha Dhakka route and then on the Nerul-Rewas-Mandwa route in Raigad district.
