MSRTC Strike: Over 1,000 Employees Suspended As Agitation Continues

On the 33rd day of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) workers' strike, 73,000 employees continued their agitation. The MSRTC thus suspended an additional 1,088 employees on Monday, November 29, stated reports.

With this, the aggregate number of personnel suspended now stands at 7,585. Over 200 depots were non-operational as the services continued to be crippled across Maharashtra.

Based on accounts, Shashank Rao, one of the union leaders of the Sangharsh ST Kamgar union, went on an indefinite hunger strike after writing a letter to state Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray, outside Parel depot.

Sources in narratives claim that the police took him from near the depot gate to the police station, where he is believed to have continued his hunger strike. On the other hand, on Monday, November 29, 19,163 staffers were reported to have resumed their duty.

Anil Parab, the state transport minister and MSRTC Chairman cautioned towards strict action against unions and employees who are hindering those staffers from coming to work or intimidating them.

Additionally, many students are facing problems owing to the unavailability of buses at the time when schools across Maharashtra are anticipated to open soon. Moreover, the government had announced a pay rise of nearly 41 per cent for the personnel.
