Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) which is the most crowded railway station in Mumbai has witnessed a decrease in the number of commuters. In the last 11 years, the number of passengers travelling from CSMT railway station have reduced by 47.4 per cent.

However, the crowd has shifted to Dadar railway station. The crowd includes people travelling to the suburbs and long-distance. The crowd at CSMT station is declining every year because several offices which were earlier situated in South Mumbai have shifted to North and Western parts of the city.

In the year 2007-08, almost 8.8 crore commuters travelled from CSMT while the statistics show that only 4.06 crore people remain in the year 2018-19. Passengers who take long-distance trains from CSMT have also decreased to 13 lakh from 22 lakh which is almost 41 per cent less.
