After floating around in the news almost every day, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has given us an update about the ongoing Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ line 3 work. Only 10 percent of the work has been completed till now, according to Subodh Gupta, Director (Projects).

On Thursday, MMRC had invited journalists to inspect the work in progress and to provide an update on the Meto-3 project. They’re going to start with the tunnelling work in October and aim to complete the project by 2021 and Mumbai’s first underground train will be functional then.

Cuffe Parade, Science Museum, Siddhivinayak, Azad Maidan, Sahar Road, Pali Maidan are undergoing launching shaft construction.

The construction between Aarey and BKC is expected to be completed by September 2020 whereas BKC to Cuffe Parade is expected to be completed by March 2021

Around Rs 23,186 crore has been invested in this project. MMRC claim that after the Metro becomes functional, 15 percent of the load on local trains will ease off.

It is estimated that around 17 lakh people will use the Metro by 2031. MMRC have taken a lot of criticism over their tree-cutting spree. Only time will tell whether this project is really going to benefit the city.
