Central Railway authorities have started using flap gates with QR codes for easy and contact-free authentication of passengers. This new system has been set up at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

“Flap gates with QR code have been installed at CSMT. Passengers are being screened. The gates will facilitate safe travel and promote social distancing between passengers,” Shivaji Sutar, Chief Public Relations Officer at Central Railway said.

Authorities said that these QR-code equipped flap gates will also be installed at Churchgate, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, as well as other stations in Mumbai. The authentication is done pretty smoothly with QR codes, and passengers are required to scan their e-tickets at the station entry points.

Authorities said that the QR code tickets can be generated via the IRCTC (Indian Rail Catering Tourism Corporation) website. Those who choose to get their tickets at the station will receive their QR codes on their phones, the officials added.

Meanwhile, essential service employees have been travelling by local trains since the lockdown. Their entry was regulated with QR code-based tickets generated specifically for essential staff to travel on local trains.

The system is currently being used at CSMT, Dadar, Mulund, Kurla, Thane, Diva, Ghatkopar, Dombivli, Kalyan, Byculla, Wadala, Mankhurd, Panvel, Titvala and Badlapur stations.
Mumbaikars’ ability to travel by local trains has been severely hindered as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the state has considered reopening local trains for all starting in November.

Given the fact that Mumbaikars prefer local trains for a bulk of their daily commute, authorities are expecting to face new challenges with regard to social distancing as well as mitigating risks of contracting the virus.
