The Western Railway (WR) has accomplished a significant achievement in the last six days, which is the beginning of May 2024. The Mumbai division of WR have sold more than 1,00,000 season tickets for Air Conditioned (AC) local trains for the first time ever since they were introduced. This surpassed the previous record, on February 5, where 3,737 season tickets were issued.
Additionally, the third-highest sale of season tickets recorded up to 3673, on April 15, 2024. These statistics indicate a consistent upward trend in commuters' preference for AC local services especially during the scorching heat. The surge in the footfall also showcases a growing demand and popularity for such transportation options.
In the month of May this year, just within first six days, a total of 1,60,645 AC local train tickets were booked by the commuters on the Western Railway. Compared to the last year during the same period, there has been a noteworthy growth of over 30 per cent.
An official from the Western Railway while commenting on the trend said that the popularity of AC local train services among commuters over this line is growing day by day. This observation is supported by the continuous increase in the number of passengers opting for AC local trains. The steady rise in passengers choosing AC local lends credibility to this assertion of the official.
Seven rakes are used on the Western Railway's suburban section to carry out 96 AC local train services on weekdays. Now, the railways are planning to add another rake of air-conditioned local trains in the near future in an effort to improve comfort and convenience of all the commuters.
The WR has already been allocated a couple more rakes for 12-car AC local trains, one of which is slated to be inducted soon.
The arrival of more air-conditioned trains is anticipated to bring much-needed relief to travellers commuting via one of the busiest Mumbai suburban railway network as temperatures are on the rise.
The impending introduction of the new rake demonstrates Western Railway's dedication to updating its fleet and improving the commuter experience for the millions of people who depend on its services on a daily basis. Western Railway's plan to increase the number of air-conditioned trains in its fleet is in line with the more general objective of improving the infrastructure for public transport and encouraging sustainable mobility in metropolitan regions.
