Fuel prices were revised across the country for the fifth straight day on Saturday, February 13.

In Mumbai, fuel prices are the highest among the four metros. Petrol prices in the city is just INR 5 per litre short of touching three-digit mark of INR 100 per litre for the very first ever anywhere in the country. Diesel prices in the city is closing on INR 90 a litre.

While petrol is retailing at INR 94.93 per litre, diesel is retailing at INR 85.70, a rise of 30 and 38 paise a litre respectively.

Public ire was evident after the fuel prices remained sky-rocketed through the first quarter of the year. People said that the government must think of common people and not take advantage of them during these tough times. Meanwhile, some hope that it might go down soon.

“After all the situations that country has been facing since last year due to pandemic, this is just another one. However, the sad part is this is not the first time the petrol price has been hiked in this way. Many people have lost jobs, most of the businesses are doomed, many of them are not getting paid despite jobs due to companies suffering losses, at such times, the least government could do was to take control of the price hike. Nonetheless, it seems to have failed in doing so, as a result, it is now affecting the common people as usual,” said Rochak Saxena, a resident of Mira Road.

“The increase in fuel prices is not good for the end user. It becomes difficult to manage the daily or monthly expenses given the rising rates of petrol and diesel. Moreover, the taxes levied by the central and state government makes it even more expensive. The burden is increasing day by day,” said Darshan Mehta, who is also a working professional in finance sector, adding, “I understand the need for higher petroleum and diesel prices in India, which helps the government to earn more revenue so that they can spend it on different important areas like Defence, Infrastructure and others. Though, the burden on the regular economic people is high currently, it shall come down in sometime.”

With the Mumbai local train services are available with restricted timings for the general public, it is creating problems for vehicle users on a daily basis.

“Daily commute has become quite stressful as the petrol consumption is higher, as a result, it offers no help to our wallet. The majority of people now use their own vehicles, so the traffic on roads has increased significantly. This causes an increase in travelling time along with the consumption of petrol and diesel,” exclaimed Mehta, who commutes from Borivali to Andheri daily.

Talking on similar lines, Saxena said, “As the frequency of train is limited to all, the impact on the road traffic has increased invariably. Due to which, the consumption of petrol is more than usual. However, we have no choice but to pay and suffer.”

Accordingly, state-run oil marketing companies raised the pump price of diesel by year high level of 36 paise per litre and petrol by another 30 paise per litre in Delhi.

Petrol and diesel prices maintained its northward rally amid firm global prices with the benchmark Brent crude gaining over 2 per cent on a single day to cross $62 a barrel mark.
