The Elphinstone stampede which claimed 23 lives has shaken up Indian Railways after which they have decided to upgrade the suburban stations by March 2018. Last Saturday, CR officials and residents inspected Byculla, Currey Road and Cotton Green stations.

A multi-disciplinary committee which was set up gave its recommendations for five major stations namely Kurla, Dadar, Thane, Parel, and Kalyan. 

According to the recommendations, the Central Railway has decided to build two escalators at Byculla, a new foot overbridge at Currey Road and an additional ticket booking window at Cotton Green station. Apart from this, toilets will be renovated and the main entry and facade will be improved, reported Mumbai Mirror.

On an urgent basis, a foot overbridge will be constructed on Currey Road station by the end of December and Cotton Green station will get a new ticket counter. CR is also planning to bring in a pay-and-park bay near Byculla station’s platform no. 1.

A senior railway official told Mumbai Mirror that the upgrading suburban stations will be done on priority.
