Mumbai – The BEST which is facing financial crisis had virtually decided to hike bus fares by 50 per cent than the current fares. Now, the minimum fare will be of Rs 12 as the BEST will be charging Rs 4 more in the base minimum fare.

The administration of BEST undertaking has shown readiness to implement the report of BMC administration which has recommended bus fare hike. It is also going to exercise cost cutting moves and various concessions are likely to be frozen including Dearness Allowances of BEST staff from April 1, 2017. The AC bus service will also be stopped and concessions for students and journalists will also be curtailed.

Proposed cost-cutting moves of BEST include: 

  • DA allowance to be frozen
  • Working allowance for ‘B’ grade officers
  • Traveling allowance for ‘B’ grade officers
  • Cancellation of medical allowance
  • Leave travel allowance
  • Telephone bills
  • Financial help to BEST staffers’ children studying in schools and colleges
  • Scholarship scheme
  • Financial help to canteen owners
  • Financial help on home loans
  • Cancellation of 25 posts in ‘A’ grade
  • Ban on regular recruitment
  • Improvement in electric section working style
  • Improvement in purchase process
  • Redevelopment of bus fleets
  • Stopping of AC bus services
  • Hike in bus passes
  • Hike in bus passes for students
  • Cancellation of Ananddayi scheme
  • Hike in bus passes for retired employees
  • Hike in bus passes for journalists
