Over the last few months, railways have allowed employees from the essential services to travel by the Mumbai Local Trains, and in the past few weeks, permissions have been given to dabbawalas, lawyers and women as well, which has brought a sigh of relief for the commuters. In a recently announced decision, the railways have also permitted private security guards to travel by local trains.

The decision was taken after a letter was written to the ministry regarding the same. A few days back, a written note was addressed to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Home Minister Anil Deshmukh seeking permission for private security personnel working in the essential services to travel by local. The letter said that for the last seven months in the lockdown, firms have been providing security services to large companies, hospitals, important offices, car showrooms and even when transport services are not available, the security guards were performing their duties faithfully. Keeping this in mind, a request was sent to the state government to allow them to travel in the local trains.

Addressing the same, officials said that the decision was valid as the employees of the private security firms were coming from Mumbai suburbs, and most of them have a salary of INR 12,000 to Rs 15,000. Out of this, they have to spend INR 3,500 to Rs 4,000 a month to come to Mumbai for work, in the current scenario, and this cost is not affordable.

The Maharashtra government has given a nod to the same, and private security guards will now be able to travel by showing their identity cards.
