Even though the decision was taken to install CCTV cameras in all coaches of the Mumbai locals in order to curb the instances of crime in the Central Railways, even after three years, no action has been taken by the Railways regarding the installation of the cameras.

Even in this year's Union Budget, only INR 10 lakhs has been provided for this work. Passengers travelling on the Central and Western Railway suburban routes at night or around dawn face many problems. Recently, there was a reported intrusion of male passengers in the female coach.

Moreover, ordinary passengers also infiltrate the wheelchair. Punitive action is taken against ordinary passengers who travel illegally in a wheelchair. However, in order to prevent such incidents from happening and to curb intrusive and criminal tendencies, the decision was taken to install 10,349 CCTV cameras in the coaches of all trains, including locals, about three years ago.

It was also approved in the February 2018 Union Budget. This work was to be done by 'Rail Tale'. It was expected to cost INR 355 crores. However, no camera has been installed in the scheme so far. The cameras were to be installed in the women's reserved compartment of the locomotive by the Mumbai Management Department of the Central Railway. However, for the last two years, that work has been going on at a slow pace.

However, after the accident on the Elphinstone pedestrian bridge, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had called for a meeting with the railway offers to make a decision regarding the same. As per reports, CCTV cameras were installed in the Divyang Dabha in a total of four locomotives, three in the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and one in Siemens. In addition, it was reported that the CCTV system will be installed in the existing locomotives in phases.
