Several commuters in the city of Mumbai use the city's lifeline - local trains - for their daily travel. Often, these trains are packed with people, many hanging with little support at the door, risking lives, only hoping to reach their destination safely and on-time. However, unfortunately, a number of people lose their lives during this journey, and it is learned that the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 reduced the number of accidents.
Information sought by RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh reveals more information, whereby the report from the Mumbai Railway Police sheds light on the number of people who were killed and injured as they fell off a Mumbai suburban train or crossed a railway line between January and December 2020.
According to the information received, a total of 1,116 passengers lost their lives after falling off a train or crossed the railway line, and this data includes 983 male and 133 female passengers. Furthermore, 878 passengers were injured, of which 688 were male and 190 were female passengers. In total, 523 passengers were killed and 747 injured on the Central Railway line, and 369 passengers were killed and 355 injured on the Western Railway.

Data shows that a total of 24,534 passengers were killed and 26,675 passengers were injured while crossing the Mumbai Suburban Railway line from 2013 to 2019.
