It becomes very difficult for senior citizens to travel through Mumbai local during rush hours. However, now the commute of the senior citizens is likely to get better and convenient as the railways have decided to reserve one compartment for senior citizens.

This development came after a petition was filed in the Bombay High Court (HC) on the issue of limited seats in the local causing discomfort considering the rise in passenger footfall.

While hearing the petition, the court directed the Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) to settle the matter.

At that time, the railways had said that it was planning to convert the old coaches into reserved coaches for senior citizens. A similar proposal was also sent for approval. Now this proposal of railway has been approved. Therefore, there will soon be reserved coaches for senior citizens in the local on the Central and Western Railway lines.

The compartment in the middle of the train will be changed and it will be converted and reserved for senior citizens. This coach has a capacity of 104 passengers with seating capacity of 13 seats and 91 standing passengers. It will be transformed.

Meanwhile, seven seats each in the first and last second class coaches of the local are reserved for senior citizens. So, a local of 12 coaches has 4 first class coaches. So, three coaches are reserved for women passengers and two coaches are reserved for disabled passengers and the remaining coaches are reserved for general public. As the passenger load of cargo carriers in luggage compartment is very low, one of them will be converted for senior citizens.
