In a first, passengers on Western Railway AC locals will soon be able to shop while travelling. Western Railway has decided to introduce the 'Shopping on Wheels' concept in the suburban AC local trains. The initiative will kick off on the Churchgate-Virar route. Earlier last year, Western Railway had started the 'Shopping on Wheels' program on long-distance express trains.
According to reports, the vendors will be allowed to sell skin and hair care products, cosmetics, health-related products, laptop and mobile accessories, confectionery, among other items from the shops on wheels at MRP. Currently, WR is appointing salepersons who will be selling these products on the go.

The report also stated that the trolley would be three feet tall and a foot wide. Meanwhile, Western Railway has already floated tenders for the ambitious project. The shopkeepers will be provided with a uniform that will distinguish them from illegal vendors. WR is planning to employ four shopkeepers carrying two trolleys.
The items will be available from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm in the AC Local trains on the Virar-Churchgate route. More importantly, these shopkeepers will not scream to sell their products but instead will have a catalogue describing the available items.
This will be the first time that the rail authorities are planning to introduce means to generate non-fare revenue on suburban local trains.
