Drivers were given an extension till January 15 to recalibrate the meters of rickshaw-taxi after the implementation of new fares. However, a penal action has been started against the rickshaw-taxi drivers who failed to calibrate their metres even after the expiry of this period. In the last three days, four RTOs in Mumbai have fined 1,011 drivers.

There are 50,000 taxis and 4.5 lakh rickshaws in Mumbai and drivers were given a deadline of 30 November 2022 to change the metre after the new fare. However, as only 40 percent of the metres were changed, the deadline was extended to January 15, 2023. Post this, the drivers started coming to the RTO to change the rickshaw-taxi metres. Meanwhile, some drivers are charging the fare from the passengers without changing their metre. Due to this, there are also cases of collecting excess fare, and disputes are also being registered between the passengers and the drivers. Hence, the transport department warned the drivers to change the metres or face the action. Accordingly, a penalty of Rs 50 per day and a maximum of Rs 5,000 is being charged as a part of penal action.

Since January 16, 2023 a total of 1,011 rickshaw-taxi drivers have been fined in the action initiated by Tardeo, Wadala, Andheri, Borivali RTOs in Mumbai.
