Amid the soaring temperatures in Mumbai, travellers of the local trains in the Western Railways (WR) are reportedly drawn towards air-conditioned trains. According to the latest reports, since the commencement of this year, the number of daily travellers using AC locals has increased by over 340 per cent.

Based on an account by the Free Press Journal, on Monday, April 4, the WR attained a feat by ferrying over 5,30,00 passengers inside AC locals on the route from Churchgate to Virar which is 60-km in length. This comes when Metro Line 7 and Line 2A were inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray

However, since it has been partially opened it only covers the Dahisar to Goregaon/Malad stretch. It has been reported that until April 4, nearly 1.03 lakh passengers travelled on the new Mumbai Metro routes.

WR officials have been quoted in narratives, elucidating how in the first four days of April, around 1.07 lakh commuters have been using the AC locals. Daily, this figure stands at 2,66,00. Similarly, the WR sold 1597 journey tickets and 1052 season passes on Monday. With this, the daily passenger figure rose to over 5,34,00 on Monday.

Additionally, in March there were 4.76 lakh passengers, the numbers in February and January, on the other hand, stood at 3.14 lakh passengers and 2.44 lakh passengers respectively in the AC locals. The WR reportedly operates 28 services of the AC locals that run on the Churchgate-Virar Main Line on slow and fast corridors.

While the Harbour Line runs from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Goregaon. A major issue for the AC locals is the frequency and fare.
