According to the latest reports, the Indian Railways have decided to install an audio-visual recording system inside the motorman and guard cabins. Apart from this, they are also looking at installing CCTV cameras on the suburban train’s exteriors that will assist during investigations of accidents or crew performance assessments.

Based on accounts, the railway ministry in the 2022-23 budget sanctioned nearly INR 2.5 crore for the installation of the audio-visual technology in all 226 suburban rakes throughout the Central Railways (CR) and Western Railways (WR).

It has been reported that in the Mumbai region, the WR has already installed the said technology in 25 of its locomotives. On the other hand, three rakes in the CR are equipped with the discussed technology, claimed narratives.

A senior official was quoted in reports elaborating on how the presence of cameras will deter those unauthorized from utilizing the motorman or guard cabin.

Sumit Thakur, WR chief public relations officer mentioned that they will be able to finish the installation in all the 113 rakes by December, remarked narratives. Similarly, Shivaji Sutar CR chief public relations officer added that the technology will be put up in the remaining 165 suburban rakes in a phased manner.
