On Sunday morning, Central Railway (CR) will be carrying out a megablock from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm in order to dismantle the 100-year-old Patri Pool bridge in Kalyan. During the block, 170 suburban and 14 intercity train services (linking Mumbai to Pune and Nashik) will remain suspended considering the dismantling work.

However, for the passengers’ convenience during the block period, the CR will run 120 special services between Dombivli and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSTM) and beyond Kalyan. Along with this, long-distance train passengers may also face problems as 15 trains will be diverted and 10 trains will be regulated at different stations.

In the month of July, a part of Andheri’s Gokhale bridge collapsed and claimed two lives. Sensing the urgency and seriousness, post-collapse, Indian Railways along with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) carried out an audit of rail-over-bridges. Accordingly, in the month of August, Patri Pool bridge was shut by the CR following a report from experts of IIT- Bombay who classified the bridge as unsafe and unfit for traffic.

From August 3, the bridge was shut down for heavy vehicles but light vehicles were allowed to pass.

The CR’s construction department will be dismantling the bridge while Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will construct a new bridge in its place.
