Senior citizens unhappy with ST Corporation's smart card initiative

The initiative was brought after several people went on to make fake passes and used it to misuse the benefits offered to the senior citizens. But the program has caused more harm than benefit to them

With an aim to make travelling in State Transport (ST) buses a comfortable affair for senior citizens, Maharashtra ST Corporation had introduced 'smart cards' earlier this year.

However, the initiative seems to have caused trouble for the senior citizens as they have complained that they are required to go to different bus depots in Mumbai to collect their smart cards. This initiative ensures that senior citizens only can be benefited from the smart cards. However, several people went on to make fake passes and presented to misuse the benefits offered to the senior citizens.

The pass for senior citizens looks like a usual ST bus pass and so, the possibility of duplicating the pass are high. This new digital pass, i.e. Smart Card, is a verified pass and can only be given to senior citizens after they provide sufficient ID proof. 

Close to 17 lakh passengers had applied for the senior citizen-oriented service but several passengers complained that they were unable to get a smart card despite successfully registering for the same.

Despite their attempt to bring a digitalised approach to ticketing in ST buses, the program has caused more harm than benefit to the senior citizens who have voiced their concern about the issues they have been facing.
