ST Employees demand daily health checkup

ST Employees demand daily health checkup

Recently, the BMC announced 200 hotspots across the city where the virus needs to be controlled. The Parel and Mumbai Central depots of State Transport come under two of the hotspots, leaving the employees vulnerable as they ferry essential employees. In order to make sure that they are safe, the ST Employees' Congress demanded a daily health checkup for the staff members along with daily thermal screening.

Maharashtra has become the epicentre of the coronavirus pandemic in India with close to 2000-cases being recorded so far. 91 per cent of these cases are in Mumbai and Pune.

As the new cases originate in Mumbai, the civic body is taking extra measures to curb the spread of the virus. With an aim to take strict actions in these critical conditions, BMC officials have decided to impose curfew-like restrictions in the 'hotspot' areas, which have been brought in effect immediately, until further notice.

Amid the coronavirus scare, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses and the ST buses are the only means of public transport that are ferrying essential employees. Their safety is a paramount as unlike the doctors, they don't possess Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to safeguard themselves from the virus.

Therefore, with Parel and Mumbai Central being under the BMC's hotspot list, the ST Employees' Congress wants the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to safeguard its staff.
