On Tuesday, November 2, a ticket checker was assaulted at Nahur railway station on the Central line of the Mumbai suburban railway network by a group of women passengers. According to reports, ticketless commuter fell on the steps of a foot over bridge while trying to escape a team of ticket checkers.

However, it came to light that the ticket checker was beaten up for no reason.

The ticket checker, Sandeep Chitale, told his seniors that he, along with other members of his team, was checking passenger tickets at Nahur station’s Kalyan-end FOB on Tuesday morning when a group of women rushed towards him, shouting. They assaulted him, blaming him for the accident involving a passenger who fell on the FOB steps while running away, the TC said.

Chitale said that he had not asked the passenger concerned for a ticket and was not even aware that he had fallen down. While the ticket checker, in his statement, said that he was standing elsewhere and the commuter on spotting him on the bridge from afar tried to flee, the mob of women, in no mood to listen, bashed him up.

However, sources said the ticket checker and RPF personnel on duty tried to chase the ticketless traveller and in the melee he fell down. However, there is no CCTV on the bridge to verify what actually happened. The railways have filed cases of assault on a public servant against the women seen in the footage.

Meanwhile, the Government Railway Police have filed an FIR against unknown persons in the case.
