The veins through which Mumbai functions, the local train services were utilized to send a human organ from a township of Kalyan to one of Parel’s private hospital's, highlighted reports. This is the second instance when the local train services were utilized to transport an organ. On 16 February 2019, a cadaver liver was transported through an icebox from a hospital in Thane called Jupiter Hospital to Parel’s Global Hospital through the train in 38 minutes.

An official from the Central Railway also elaborated, that officials from Kalyan stations, named Yeshwant Vhatkar, Anup Kumar Jain and Jaspal Rathod who is the chief ticket inspector, attained instructions at 8 am from the headquarters, that representatives of Global Hospital will come from Dadar to receive the organ.

A similar instruction was given at Dadar to see to it that the hospital team doesn’t incur any issues while boarding the train. The representatives from the hospital boarded the 9.40 am local train at Dadar for Kalyan. From where the liver of a brain-dead donor was set to be collected. The personnel reached Kalyan at 11.20 am and were taken to the station master’s cabin, where the Fortis Hospital personnel handed over the organ.

To ensure crowd control and clear the foot-over-bridge of commuters, a Railway Protection Force (RPF) was given instructions.

The team got on the first-class compartment of the Kasara-CSMT local with the organ at 11.38 am. The team was given an RPF escort till their journey in Dadar. The journey from Kalyan to Dadar took 58 minutes, opposed to the 150 minutes it could have taken through the road. Out of Dadar station, the team was escorted in a few minutes after which from an ambulance they left for Global hospital. By road, the journey from Kalyan to Parel is 50km.

Reports further elucidated that the medical institution chose to use the rail as the time frame for liver transplant is 12-14 hours. The organs are put in sterile containers, put in ice and taken to the transport centre.

Anil Kumar Jain, the senior public relations officer of the CR elaborated that it is the second instance of an organ is taken from a suburban train. They have a protocol and their team ensures that the operation didn’t face any hindrances.
