On Wednesday, taxi-hailing firm Uber claimed that the company’s air taxi initiative will be able to cut down the travel time in Mumbai by 90 per cent. Uber had named Dallas and Los Angeles in the United States as the initial two cities for the cab company’s aerial taxi service commercial launch by 2023. However, they are still looking for an international city for its third partner.

Uber has shortlisted India as one of the five countries that are potential markets for Uber Air service in the next five years. The cab company had announced the concept of a flying taxi in May 2018 and has announced its plans to launch the service in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru at an event in Tokyo on August 31.

This is the type of urban mobility game changer that this kind of solution brings. We think that once we are able to do it at scale as we are able to drive fully into it with the cost that these VTOL (vertical take-off landing) vehicles produce, we can do it at a cost comparable to our Uber X cost per passenger mile basis," said Eric Allison, chief executive, Uber Aviation Program.

Eric Allison stated that the prices of the service will be at par with its taxis. The service will use rooftops of high rises and tall dedicated skyports.
