The frontline workers of the BrihanMumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) have finally started receiving vaccine inoculation from the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The transport undertaking had proposed the names of all the 34,000 employees as recipients for the COVID-19 vaccines in the second phase. Amidst the pandemic, BEST had emerged to become the lifeline of Mumbai by ferrying essential service providers when railway services were completely suspended. To ensure uninterrupted services, employees of both the transport and electricity wing of BEST were on ground throughout the lockdown period. BEST has a tax exemption rate of over 96 per cent.

After the lockdown relaxation, BEST began operating buses at full passenger capacity. During the last 10 months, many employees serving in various departments have tested positive for coronavirus. So far, 2,805 officers and employees have been released. As many as 60 employees have died due to this deadly virus. Most of the employees that lost their lives were engaged in the transport and electricity departments. About 15 employees are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

On Thursday, February 11, the transport undertaking finally started receiving messages for vaccine inoculation from the BMC.

BEST has about 18,000 drivers. The employees can get vaccinated at 22 vaccination centres in the city from Monday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. Each BEST worker will be allotted a nearby vaccination centre depending on the depot or bus station where he is posted.
