Social distancing and controlling the crowd are two of the many mandatory precautions to be taken during coronavirus outbreak, and in the unlock phase so far, the government has constantly asked people to avoid crowding in public places.

As mentioned, selected services in Maharashtra have resumed under the ‘Mission Begin Again’ initiative, however, Mumbai’s lifeline – the local train services – have been shut since March 2020, for the public. Currently, some trains are being used only by the workers of essential services. However, as per recent updates, Mumbai local train services might resume from September 1, 2020, after Ganpati Visarjan.

Keeping this in mind, officials are likely to implement some new changes before local train services begin, and with an aim to improve and ensure safety procedures, the department may soon install QR codes at the entrance, to avoid overcrowding at railway stations.

The project will be implemented on a pilot basis, at Mumbai’s Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway stations. The new system will work similar to the current entrance gates installed at all Metro stations in the city, and it is expected that this move will control crowding.

As per reports, QR-based gate was inspected on August 11, 2020, at the railway stations on the Western Railway with the help of a private company. The report will be handed over to the railway authorities soon, which will help take the right steps amidst the pandemic.

The next phase of the unlock is set to begin in September and strict guidelines are being planned by the transport and railway administration before resuming local services for the general public.

On a regular day, Mumbai Local carries 80 lakh passengers daily, out of these, 3.5 million passengers travel on the Western Railway.
