The CCTVs and the Talk Back system installed in the women's compartments has helped the Western Railway recover a hefty amount within a short span, by way of penalties from offenders.
Criminal offences have been registered against 16,012 persons who have been found to be traveling illegally in women's compartments, and an amount of Rs 3,30, 600 recovered from them. WR spokesperson says 14 people have been charged under the Railway Regulatory Act for related offences. The installation of the CCTVs and the talk back system was necessitated by increasing incidences of thefts and attacks in the women's compartments, endangering the safety of women commuters. Several women have availed of the system and reported offenders.
The railway police have so far collected Rs. 5 crore in penalties in cases of theft, robbery, molestation filed against men, says the spokesperson.
