According to the latest reports, in an attempt to increase passenger safety as well as avoid local train mishaps, collisions and derailments that are a result of human error, the Western Railways has begun installing audio systems to caution the motorman about red signals during train operations.

Based on accounts, Next Signal Red Alert Device (NSRAD) LED devices are being put up inside the motorman coach of local trains to indicate that the next railway signal is red. This signifies that a local or outstation train should be on a halt.

It has been reported that the said devices are interfaced with the Automatic Warning System (AWS), thus if a train comes near a yellow signal, the red indicator on the device goes off and an alert in English and Hindi says that the next signal is red

A senior Western Railway official was quoted by narratives elaborating on how the announcement can be stopped manually by pressing the green push button on the console if required. Adding that it will stop for 18 seconds but will restart automatically for safety.

It is believed that the NSRAD devices will assist the motormen to avoid mishaps of Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) on the network. Additionally, Central Railways and Western Railways are also installing audio-visual systems.

This entails placing high-end cameras inside motorman and guard cabins and outside their cabins on the local trains. Moreover, audio-visual technology has been installed in 25 locomotives on the Western Railway and 30 locomotives on the Central Railway.
