Currently, there are 22 driving test tracks in the state. They are, Mumbai (Central), Mumbai (West), Mumbai (East), Thane (Nandivali), Thane (Murphy), Panvel, Pen, Pune (Alandi), Pune (Saswad), Pune (Hadapsar), Dhule, Amravati, Amravati (Badnera), Nagpur (City), Nagpur (Rural), Nashik, Nanded, Latur, Kolhapur, Karad, Nagpur (Rural).

On the other hand, the issue of the appropriate criterion for authorizing a driver’s license has cropped up with India accounting for the most number of deaths globally in 2018 and 2019 for road accidents.  Last year, two accidents in the city have highlighted the problem of driving licenses being issued to drivers with medical conditions that make them prone to accidents.

On August 31, 2020, Sameer Ali Sayyed, drove his Maruti Suzuki Esteem into a restaurant on Carnac Bunder Street in South Mumbai, killing five and injuring three people. As per reports, Sayyed had lost control of his vehicle because of an epileptic attack. On the other hand, a bus driver Haridas Patil suffered a heart attack while he driving a Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) bus on October 20. He crashed into a signal near Chembur and damaged a small vegetable shop.

Moreover, the World Road Statistics has ranked India first in the list of road accidents across the 199 countries in a 2018 report. The list had China and the United States of America in second and third positions. In addition, a report in the same year by the World Health Organization (WHO) found that 11 per cent of all accident-related deaths globally were in India.
