In recent developments, it has been reported that 1,02,342 people were caught on the Central Railways without tickets whereas 29,555 passengers were caught on the Western Railways without the same.

As the Mumbai locals are currently ferrying people engaged in essential services only, several citizens have been reportedly flouting the COVID-19 norms which restrict travel on the suburban railway system.

In the three months from April to June, the officials had taken action against 1,31,897 ticketless passengers. Also, 4,000 fake identity cards have been seized by the railways in two months. In April, action was taken against 8,228 passengers on the Western Railway suburban route. The number had gone up to 9,599 in May and 11,728 in June. On the Central Railway, the number of passengers found without tickets is higher. In April, the officials had taken action against 28,910 passengers. The number was 32,907 in May and 40,525 in June.

Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court on Saturday, July 3, announced that lawyers will not be permitted to avail of local train services till the end of July.

The division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni stated that it isn’t within its purview to overrule medical experts’ opinions by judicial order. Thus, taking into cognizance the task force’s position, Mumbai local train services will continue to remain available to the few permitted.
