A few years back, officials had announced an upgrade on the Belapur-Seawood-Uran suburban railway line, based on which the work on Kharkopar to Uran route had begun. However, as per reports, the progress on this project has been slow and as of now, the target has been pushed by over a year.

It is said that out of 14 km of this route, the land acquisition phase of 3 km has not gained momentum, and hence the completion target is moved ahead of the earlier suggested March 2021. The project to develop the Belapur-Seawood-Uran suburban railway line began in 1997 and is incomplete till date, and the project was expected to connect Uran with Navi Mumbai

The first phase of this route began in 2019 and the focus was on the Belapur-Nerul-Kharkopar railway line, where 20 round trips on both Belapur to Kharkopar to Belapur route and 20 round trips on Nerul to Kharkopar to Nerul route were planned. Post this, the work on the Kharkopar-Uran road line was expected to begin in the second phase of the project, however, it has not reached the expected development phase yet.

Reports suggest that out of the 14 km stretch from Kharkopar to Uran, only 11 km land has come under the control of Central Railway. The project includes construction of five stations, two big bridges, 41 small bridges, along with four flyovers on this route.

Earlier, the Central Railway has emphasized on completing this important work with the available manpower. Currently, officials at CIDCO and the forest department are planning discussions on using the forest land. No updates have been announced regarding the project in recent time.
