A key part of this project is the ongoing redevelopment of Surat railway station, where dedicated platforms are being constructed to handle suburban train operations. These upgrades will enable the smooth introduction of high-capacity, modern trains like the Namo Bharat, along with upgraded EMU and MEMU services. The improved infrastructure is designed to support faster, more efficient train movement and increased service frequency.
Currently, travel between Mumbai and Surat is served by MEMU trains that take over five hours and make numerous stops, making them less suitable for daily commuting. In contrast, the proposed Namo Bharat trains are designed for longer suburban journeys, offering enhanced comfort with features such as air-conditioned coaches, better seating arrangements, and onboard facilities like toilets. These improvements will make travel more convenient, particularly for journeys lasting two to three hours or more.
The broader vision of the project is to integrate multiple towns and cities along the route, including Valsad, Dahanu, and Virar, into a unified suburban network. This would not only reduce travel time but also improve connectivity across regions, easing pressure on road transport and existing railway services. Additionally, the redevelopment of Surat station will further enhance the overall efficiency of the corridor.
Overall, the Mumbai–Surat Namo Bharat train project represents a major step toward modernising regional transport, improving passenger comfort, and supporting economic activity by enabling faster and more reliable travel between key urban centers.
