On Friday, December 4, Damodar Tandel, the President of statewide fishermen association succumbed to a heart attack.

Damodar Tandel had become the Vice President of Maharashtra’s Fisheries Corporation from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 2002. He had later joined the Shiv Sena in 2014. Tandel was earlier tested for the coronavirus as he was suffering from the flu, however, his results came negative.

As the president of Akhil Maharashtra Machhimar Kruti Samiti, Tandel had worked extensively in order to improve Mumbai’s fishing infrastructure along the coastline. Moreover, he fought against the use of exploitative purse seine nets by large commercial trawlers. In addition, he also focused on the ‘mistreatment’ of fishermen by the maritime authorities mid-sea.

As the fishing community has lost a former champion of its causes, several individuals, including the Former fisheries commissioner Rajeev Jadhav spoke about the impact Tandel had around his peers.

On the other hand, earlier on December 1, Laxman Murdeshwar, the owner of the very popular ‘Mamledar Misal’ passed away after dealing with a prolonged illness. The 84-year-old has been tingling the taste buds of the people in Mumbai since 1952. The 'Mamledar Misal' was founded by Murdeshwar's father Narsimha, who introduced misal along with other Maharashtrian dishes which later became popular across the city. Over the years, the Murdeshwar family have served people across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai at their 14 joints.
