Kanchana Banerjee’s first book was titled ‘A Forgotten Affair’ which was published in 2016. But her journey of being a published writer is nothing less than interesting. Talking about the same, she said, “In 2014 I had participated in Bangalore Literatures Festival’s competition Lit Mart wherein writers had to pitch the idea of their book in front of a panel comprising of literary agents and commissioning editors. After my 3 minutes pitch, one of the best publishing house in the country- Harper Collins liked the story and selected the manuscript and that’s how my journey with them began. In 2019, I published my second book ‘Nobody’s Child’ with them which is a fast-paced dark thriller. It is very different from my first book which was a domestic drama.”

Every writer is aware of the fact and as William Zinsser had famously said- It’s not the writings but the re-writing that counts, Kanchana Banerjee’s final edition of the book was a major revamp as compared to the first draft.

“I submitted the first draft of ‘Nobody’s Child’ to Harper Collins and they rejected it by saying that the book is good but they don’t know how to market it. I started re-writing the book and focused majorly on the thriller genre. I completely changed the entire story and left a very thin skeleton of the earlier version which was a relationship drama. I re-submitted it and this time the editorial team was in love with the manuscript. Therefore I consider this book as my third book.”

Talking about how she has experimented with the narrative of the book and the reader’s response to it, she said, “The book is written very differently wherein it is in the first person’s voice of three characters and none of these three characters is the protagonist. You get to hear from the protagonist- Aasawari from the very end but in the start, all these three characters are telling the story of the protagonist through their eyes. The tone of the narrative is in past and present wherein it goes back and forth of the timeline. For a beginner author like me, it is unexpected that the book is selling really well and people are loving it. Readers have got back to me and said that they loved the villain more in the book. In a thriller, the antagonist or the villain plays a crucial role. Exploration of the evil mind is the best part of writing the thriller as the readers are always more intrigued by it.”
