Bollywood’s obsession with “Goriya” continues to fuel hate criticism

Bollywood’s obsession with “Goriya” continues to fuel hate criticism

In 2020, apart from the pandemic related news, there has been a growing concern for all that matters! Thanks to the media, idleness of the brain and popularity of hashtags conscious netizens have been vociferous in showing their anger and frustration. This hate movement has slowly gained momentum post the SSR tragedy wherein anyone and everyone is expressing their opinion based on the convenience of the theme. The nation seems to be listening to what a popular actress has to spill the beans on and believe in the breaking news brought by a democratic channel that is on a witch hunt. This combo has ensured a new narrative has thrown Bollywood in a frenzy. The targets being the star kids and the so-called insiders of the industry.

The new age media is ensuring a manipulative and shockingly personal attack on these stars by cleverly looking at “topics” to divert and seek attention for trolls. These memes are being systematically fed and being celebrated for taking a stance on a subject of importance. The recent victims are Ishan Khattar and Ananya Pandey whose new song from their new film has been termed as racist.

Time and again the words “Gore”, “Gori”, “Goriya” has been used in numerous songs right from the iconic duet sung “Gore Gore o Baanke Chore” by Lata Mangeshkar and Ameerbhai Karnataki in the film Samadhi to the romantic classic, “Gori tera Gaoon bada payara” sung by K.J. Yesudas from chitchor and never used with any malicious intent towards the co-star. These lyrics simply describe how the partner feels about his or her beloved and does not needs to be read out of context. In fact the leading actress of the 70’s Zarina Wahab has been associated with the most number of songs including the super hit “O goriya re” from the movie Naiyaa or the iconic, “ Chaand jaise Mukhde pe” from Sawan ko aane do!!!

This is because we have fairly become judgmental, ready to pounce upon or pass comments without for a moment pondering what we are from inside for a second. Instead of finding fault in every wrongness, why don’t we find something nice, this positivity would help us and the society at large forward. Nobody seems to have noticed that the song has more than 15 different dance styles ranging from locking to ballet to house to kalai to kathak to ring dance. The backdrop of the song is a mela which would bring in people from all walks of life, culture, caste, creed come together and hence the theme is synced with the same.

If the motive remains to slander everything in the name of nepotism, racism, then the framework our culture will slowly start decaying to the point of no return. Despite speaking 22 official languages, what binds us together is Bollywood in the name of entertainment and larger than life idols. Let us not try to control them by forcing such allegations that have been misconstrued and blown out of proportion. Live and Let live rather than Belittle and let go.
