The second wave of coronavirus has hit the nation hard. As a result, many states like Maharashtra, have imposed strict restrictions and lockdown-like curbs as cases continue to mount.

These localised lockdowns have impacted over 75 lakh jobs, taking the unemployment rate to a four-month high of 8 per cent, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) said on Monday, May 3.

CMIE Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Mahesh Vyas told PTI that the employment situation will remain challenging in the years to come. As many as 7.5 million people lost their jobs in April compared to March. As a result, the unemployment rate has risen.

According to the latest figures released by the central government, the national unemployment rate has reached 7.9 per cent. In urban areas, it witnessed 9.78 per cent and in rural areas, it is 7.13 per cent.

Earlier, the national unemployment rate was 6.50 per cent in March. Also, the unemployment rate was lower in both rural and urban areas.

During last year’s lockdown, the unemployment rate had reached 24 per cent. Compared to that, the current situation is not as dire as 2020, explained Vyas.
